Play It Safe: How to Avoid Online Gaming Scams

Online gaming can be fun and exciting, but, like any online activity, there are risks. Online gaming scams are a growing threat, particularly for young players eager to boost their experience. Be cautious of offers for discounted in-game items, currency, or accounts, as they may be traps set by scammers to steal money or personal information.
What Is an Online Gaming Scam?
Online gaming scams exploit the nature of online games and the desire for players to seek in-game advantages. In these scams, third parties offer in-game items, currency, or accounts at significantly lower prices than official sources. They often advertise their services through social media, gaming forums, or in-game chat. These scammers may request payment upfront through methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or peer-to-peer payment apps. Once payment is made, the scammer may disappear without delivering the promised items, or they may provide fake or stolen goods that get your account banned.
Example of the Scam
Emily, an avid gamer, receives an in-game message from someone offering to sell her a rare collectible item for a low price. The seller claims to be quitting the game and wants to get rid of their valuable items. Emily agrees to the deal and sends payment through a peer-to-peer payment app. Unfortunately, after receiving the payment, the seller vanishes, and Emily never receives the item.
Tips for Protecting Yourself
- If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of offers for in-game items, currency, or accounts that seem too good to be true. Legitimate sellers rarely offer deep discounts, especially through unofficial channels.
- Stick to official sources. Purchase in-game items or currency only from official sources or authorized sellers. This ensures that you are getting legitimate goods and that your account won’t be compromised.
- Protect your personal information. Never share your personal information, such as your full name, address, or credit card details, with someone you met online, even if they seem trustworthy.
- Don’t click on suspicious links. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, as they may contain malware or lead to phishing sites designed to steal your information.
- Report scammers: If you encounter a scammer, report them to the game developer or platform.
If You’ve Been Scammed
- Contact us. If your account information has been compromised or you made a payment using a credit card or bank account, report the fraudulent transaction and request a chargeback.
- Report the scam to the FTC. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.FTC.gov and your local law enforcement agency.
- Report the scam to your state attorney general. You can find their contact information at naag.org.
- Change your passwords. Change the passwords for your gaming accounts and any other accounts that share the same password. This can help protect you from further unauthorized access.
